Is Fleet, Hampshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Fleet, Hampshire.

Fleet is as safe as the rest of its district, which makes it ordinary rather than a sanctuary. Its crime rate matches the district's almost exactly. Unemployment is rare. Overcrowding barely registers. It's a normal amount of crime in a comfortable town, which is a less exciting answer than the estate agent's "very safe" but a more accurate one.

Police.uk records 1,887 crimes in Fleet over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 47 per 1,000 residents. That puts it level with the local average, about 1% above it, which is close enough to count as the same.

The comparison, in both numbers: Fleet at about 47 crimes per 1,000, and Hart as a whole also at about 47. Buyers moving here from a busier town may find that reassuring. Buyers who assumed the quiet streets meant almost no crime should adjust that. Fleet has as much crime as its district, no more and no less.

The town these figures come from is a well-off, well-housed one. Fleet averages about 3,770 people per square kilometre, which makes it a proper built-up town rather than a village. Unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 census and overcrowding about 1%. These describe the neighbourhood, not the reasons for any crime in it. Deprivation isn't what's producing the numbers here, because there isn't much deprivation to speak of.

The mix is where one figure needs care. Violence and sexual offences make up about 45% of Fleet's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That's a real gap, but the category is broad: it's a statutory grouping that includes common assault without injury, and it's the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour runs lower than the national share, about 13% against 16%. Public order is about 8% against 7%, other theft about 7% against 7%, shoplifting about 7% against 8%, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. Most of the mix sits close to the national pattern. The violence share is the one figure worth looking at properly, and the headline number alone doesn't tell you enough to judge it.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question from how much crime there is, and the answer is less reassuring. Over the same year, Hampshire Constabulary, the force covering Fleet, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, placing it 38th of 42 forces. About 35% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures, not Fleet's own. They don't make the town less safe, but they do mean that if something is taken from your drive, getting it back is unlikely.

Fleet is averagely safe, about as safe as its district and no better. Keep the car locked and the front door shut, as you would anywhere else, and don't read a quiet street as proof of anything more.
