What's the area around Fair Oak like?

For anyone buying or renting in Fair Oak.

The area around Fair Oak is green, gently rural and stitched together from villages. Head in almost any direction and you hit another one: Horton Heath just to the south, Crowdhill and Fisher's Pond to the north, with West End and Eastleigh forming the larger anchors. Green space is never far. The rougher edges of the countryside, old hillforts and moated manor sites, sit within reach of the fields. This is commuter-belt Hampshire that still remembers it was farmland.

On green space the numbers are strong. A typical home sits about 140 metres from the nearest patch of it, with something close to eighteen separate green spaces within a kilometre, so a park, green or field is a short walk from almost anywhere. Water is close too, with the nearest blue space around 340 metres away. None of the surroundings carry the heavy designations, no Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, no Site of Special Scientific Interest, no ancient woodland, which means the green here is the everyday, usable sort rather than the protected, look-but-do-not-touch sort.

The character is settled and semi-rural rather than remote. Fair Oak grew out of scattered farms and a history of sand quarrying, with some of its newer streets built over old restored quarries, and that mix of old lanes and modern housing still shows. Eastleigh does the job of the nearby town for the weekly shop and the bigger errands, while the smaller villages around it, Brambridge, Durley and Boorley Green, fill in the quieter commuter-belt gaps. Further out, the land opens toward the Itchen valley and the chalk downs, the kind of countryside people drive into at weekends rather than live inside. It is a comfortable, low-key patch, closer to a network of villages than a town with edges.

The verdict is about as good as this rating gets: green on the doorstep, a ring of villages for company, and open Hampshire countryside a short drive out. If the surroundings are what you are buying for, Fair Oak sits in a genuinely good spot. Five out of five for the area around it.
