Is Eastchurch a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Eastchurch.

On the published figures, no: Eastchurch's ward records crime well above the rest of Swale. The rate runs about half as high again as the borough average. Violence makes up more than half of what gets recorded. The island's prisons sit inside the same boundary. The number is real, but it covers more than the village streets.

This page covers Eastchurch together with Warden and Leysdown-on-Sea, three settlements that share one ward on the Isle of Sheppey. Police records for that ward show 1,460 crimes between June 2025 and May 2026, a published rate of about 152 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 44% above the Swale average for the same year. Those are the published figures, and they are the ones insurers, letting agents and anyone else checking the postcode will see.

The Swale-wide rate over the same period was about 105 per 1,000 residents. Put the two side by side and the gap is plain: 152 against 105 is not a rounding error, and "slightly above average" would be the kind of phrase an estate agent reaches for when the photographs are better than the statistics.

The area's statistical zones average about 1,710 people per square kilometre, although that figure is pulled up by the settlements and pulled down by the marsh and farmland between them. Unemployment stands at about 5%, and about 3% of households are overcrowded. That describes a mix of villages, seaside settlements and institutions rather than a dense town centre, and the texture is closer to the country than to a high street.

What gets recorded is where the prisons matter. Violence and sexual offences make up 56% of recorded crime here, against 35% nationally. It's the biggest category almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range that includes common assault without injury. The prison cluster sits inside the ward boundary, so this is the figure to read with that in mind rather than to take as a picture of the lanes. Anti-social behaviour runs lower than the national pattern, at 12% against 16%. Criminal damage and arson make up 9% against 7% nationally, and the catch-all "other crime" 6% against 2%. The categories that hit homeowners in the pocket come in under the national shares: other theft at 4% against 7%, and vehicle crime at 3% against 5%. For anyone mainly worried about their car or their shed, those two lines matter more than the headline.

After a report, Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it sixth of 42 forces in England and Wales. That is a force-wide figure for the year to May 2026, not a measure of Eastchurch itself, and it says nothing about how often crime happens here. It answers a different question: whether anything follows the report. About 36% of cases across the force close with no suspect identified, which is the honest answer to "will they catch them".

Safety is the weak point on paper, and the prisons explain part of the gap without closing it. Anyone buying here should expect the postcode check to look worse than the walk to the shop feels, and go in knowing why.
