Is Doddinghurst a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Doddinghurst.

Doddinghurst is a safe area, and the figures back that up without much effort. Its crime rate is about half the Brentwood borough average. Hardly anyone is out of work. Hardly anyone is short of space at home. Whatever pushes up the borough's numbers, it is happening somewhere other than Doddinghurst.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 put Doddinghurst's published crime rate at about 39 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 50% below the average for Brentwood borough. In absolute terms, 319 crimes were recorded in that year.

The borough's own rate for the same year was about 76 per 1,000. That is the number the village is measured against, with Doddinghurst at 39 and Brentwood as a whole at 76. The difference is wide enough that a few bad months would not close it.

The village is spread out, with an average of about 1,900 people per square kilometre across its statistical areas. Unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 census, and about 2% of households were overcrowded. None of that explains the crime rate on its own, but it describes the kind of place it is. Big houses and long drives, where a patrol car mostly passes hedges.

The crime mix needs handling with care, because 319 crimes is a small enough total that a few incidents can move a share by several points. With that in mind, violence and sexual offences made up about 39% of recorded crime in the year to May 2026, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range, including common assault where no one was hurt. Anti-social behaviour was about 15%, close to the national 16%. Vehicle crime was about 14%, against 5% nationally, and that is the one share that stands out. Criminal damage and arson came to about 9% (7% nationally), public order offences about 7% (in line with the national 7%), and other theft about 6% (7% nationally). Another year's count could easily look different. On this one, the car on the drive is the thing most likely to attract unwanted attention. The police publish an online crime map that shows recorded crimes around any postcode month by month, and it is worth a look for the specific street.

Catching anyone is a different question from how often crime happens, and it is answered across the whole force, not village by village. Across the county in the year to May 2026, Essex Police charged a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. Across the whole force, the odds of a charge are low, so in Doddinghurst a low crime rate does more to protect residents than the chance of anyone being caught.

Safety is one of Doddinghurst's real strengths. The crime rate is half the borough's, and on this year's count the main thing to keep an eye on is the car.
