Who lives in Deanshanger?

For anyone buying or renting in Deanshanger.

Deanshanger is full of working families who own their homes and intend to stay. About three in four own. The typical resident is in their early forties. More than a quarter of households are couples with children. The village was built for raising a family, and that is mostly what its residents are doing.

At the 2021 Census, the source for every population figure on this page, Deanshanger had 4,128 residents in 1,626 households. About 76% of those households owned their home. Private renting accounted for about 10% and social renting for 11%, so housing associations and the council let roughly as many homes as private landlords do. A buy-to-let investor would find very little competition here, and very little stock.

The median resident is 41, and about 27% of people are aged 25 to 44, the years of mortgages and school runs. Deanshanger first grew in the late 18th century as an agricultural industrial centre after the canal came. Its residents still go out to work. They now drive to it or log in.

The Office for National Statistics models gross household income, before tax, at around £63,500 for the financial year to March 2023. That estimate is averaged across a wider area than the village. It is a few years old and before deductions. The amount that reaches the household bank account is smaller.

About 27% of households are couples with dependent children, and 10% are lone parents with children. Together, those households explain why the bedroom count in the village is so high.

People living alone make up about 21% of households. That includes the 11% of households that are a single pensioner living alone, so they are part of that 21%. In a village of family semis and detached houses, a tenth of homes are run by one retired person. Some of those houses will have spare rooms that rarely get used.

About 30% of adults hold a degree or equivalent, about 15% have no formal qualifications, and fewer than 2% are full-time students. The mix is broad. The students move away to study and some come back with a partner and a mortgage.

At the 2021 Census about 86% of residents described their health as good or very good. West Northamptonshire as a whole is similar to England on deaths from preventable causes and on smoking, where about 9% of adults smoke. Those are council-area figures measured against the England average, and they describe the authority as a whole. Nothing on this page describes the health of any particular resident.

Deanshanger's population is one of its strengths. It is a settled, mostly home-owning village of working families with average incomes for its area, and it keeps much the same mix as one family moves on and another arrives.
