Is Deanshanger a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Deanshanger.

Deanshanger is a safe place to live, and comfortably so. Its crime rate is less than half the council-wide figure. Very few people are out of work and very few homes are overcrowded. Search for crime across West Northamptonshire and you get a figure for the whole council area, most of which comes from places that are busier than this village.

Police recorded 187 crimes in Deanshanger in the year to May 2026. The published rate is about 42 per 1,000 residents, roughly 56% below the West Northamptonshire average. That figure is calculated on a slightly different population base from a simple head count of the village, so dividing one number by the other will give a small mismatch.

The West Northamptonshire rate over the same twelve months was about 95 crimes per 1,000 residents. Set the village's 42 beside that and the gap explains itself. The council-wide total comes mostly from towns that Deanshanger drives into, and the village contributes little to it.

The area averages about 2,840 people per square kilometre across its small statistical areas, so the village is fairly compact. Unemployment is about 2% and overcrowding about 2% of households. None of that causes or prevents crime. It describes a place where most people have a job, a mortgage and enough space for a household that is mostly settled.

Violence and sexual offences made up about 45% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour accounted for about 23%, against 16% nationally. Other theft was about 6% (7% nationally), criminal damage and arson 5% (7%), burglary 5% (4%) and public order offences 4% (7%). Violence and sexual offences is a broad legal category that includes common assault with no injury, and it is the biggest category in most of the country. With fewer than 200 crimes in a year, a handful of incidents can move any of these shares by several points. The mix shows what happened in one year. It gives no fixed picture of the place. To see where incidents were logged, look up the street on the police's own crime map, because a village average can't show that.

Northamptonshire Police charges a suspect in about 11% of the cases it closes across the whole force area, against about 12% nationally. Over the same twelve months, about 36% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. These are force figures covering the whole county and say nothing about how safe Deanshanger itself is. They answer a different question: what is likely to happen after you report a crime.

Deanshanger is one of the safer places in its council area and one of the village's real strengths. Most of the crime in the council-wide figure happens in other places.
