Is Deal, Kent a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Deal, Kent.

Yes. Deal is safe, and safer than the district around it. Crime runs about a third below the Dover district rate. Unemployment is low. Hardly anyone lives in an overcrowded home. Boredom is a bigger risk here than burglary.

In the year to May 2026, police recorded about 2,070 crimes in Deal, a published rate of about 58 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 35% below the average for the Dover local authority. The rate comes from police.uk's neighbourhood figures, which use their own population base, so it won't match a sum done on the back of an envelope. It also carries no detail on which street anything happened on, and this answer doesn't claim any.

The district average over the same year was about 90 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Deal's 58. Anyone who has heard that east Kent is rough should look at the two numbers side by side before they believe it.

Deal is more tightly packed than a small seaside town sounds. Its neighbourhoods average about 4,900 people per square kilometre. Unemployment was about 3% and about 2% of households were overcrowded. That describes a settled town where most people have work and space. None of these figures explains the crime rate on its own. They show what kind of place produces it.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 44% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That sounds worse than it is. The category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was injured, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 18%, against 16% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 10%, against 7%. Other theft is about 7%, level with the national share. Public order offences are about 4% against 7% nationally, and vehicle crime about 4% against 5%. Car thieves seem to have better places to be.

Kent Police covers the town and charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That puts it sixth of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. Charging decisions are made across the whole force, so this is Kent Police's figure, not Deal's, and it measures what happens after a report, not how safe the streets are. In about 36% of cases no suspect is ever identified. That's the honest answer to "will they catch them".

Few things about Deal should worry a buyer less than crime. The rate sits well below the district's, and the ordinary run of town life doesn't change that.
