Who lives in Datchet?

For anyone buying or renting in Datchet.

Datchet is mostly homeowners in their forties and fifties with good jobs and better health. About seven in ten own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Four in ten have a degree. It is a village of people who have already done the hard part and kept the house.

The 2021 census, the source for every population figure on this page, found about 72% of households across the Datchet area own their home. About 17% rent privately and about 11% rent from a council or housing association. Ownership is the default here, and renting is the stage people pass through on the way to it.

The median resident is 44, and about 26% of residents are aged 25 to 44. That leaves the village weighted towards people whose mortgage is older than their children.

The Office for National Statistics models typical gross household income across the area at about £68,000 a year, before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is comfortable for a commuter household, though at local house prices it describes people who could afford to stay more than people who could afford to arrive today.

The households are mixed. About 26% are one person living alone, and within those about 12% of all households are a single pensioner. Couples with children make up about 19% of households and lone parents about 9%. For every family doing the school run there is roughly a household where the only routine is the radio, and the village has room for both.

Qualifications run high. About 41% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 15% have no qualifications at all, and about 1% are full-time students. Royal Holloway College is a short way upriver, and its students are clearly living somewhere else. Barry Davies, the sports commentator, lives in Datchet, which gives the village at least one resident qualified to describe the parking in real time.

Health is good on both measures. About 87% of residents in the Datchet area described their health as good or very good at the census. Across the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, deaths from preventable causes are better than the England average, and about 7% of adults smoke, also better than England.

Datchet's residents are one of its strengths, a well-qualified, healthy and mostly home-owning village with enough single pensioners and young families to stop it becoming one long cul-de-sac of the same household.
