The schools are one of the best reasons to live in Dagenham. Nine state primaries serve the area. Three secondaries take over from there. Across the borough, nearly every graded school is good or outstanding. Dagenham gets a lot of grief, and its classrooms aren't the place to aim it.
At primary level, the nine mainstream state primaries around here average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 105, the government's measure for children finishing primary school. Valence Primary School takes its name from Valence House, the listed manor in the park, and Becontree Primary School carries the name of the estate most families here live on. The estate went up in the 1920s with schools planned in from the start, and a century later the planners would recognise the layout.
At secondary level, the three mainstream state secondaries in the area produce a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 50, the government's measure of results across eight subjects at sixteen. Robert Clack School appears in both the primary and secondary lists, so some children can stay at one school from the age of four to sixteen. Mayfield School shares its name with one of Dagenham's two conservation areas. All Saints Catholic School and Technology College is the Catholic option at secondary level.
Ofsted has graded 21 schools across Barking and Dagenham, and 20 of them are good or outstanding, almost all of them. Seven are outstanding, 13 good and one requires improvement, and none is inadequate. Another 35 settings across the borough hold no published grade yet, so they say nothing either way. A borough that inspectors rate this kindly rarely makes the national news for it.
Places are allocated under Barking and Dagenham council's published admissions rules, so buying a house within sight of the Mayfield School gates doesn't put a child on its register. The council publishes how far away the last child admitted to each school lived in previous years, and that list is the one to read for the school you want. Parents on the Becontree estate learn quickly that the houses look alike but sit at different distances from the school gates.
Dagenham's schools are one of the area's real strengths. A buyer here gets a borough where almost every graded classroom has passed inspection, and that's more than its reputation would suggest.
