What are the schools like in Cuxton?

For anyone buying or renting in Cuxton.

Good, and the primary years never leave Bush Road. The infants and the juniors sit on the same street. Nearly every graded school in Medway is rated good or better. Secondary means leaving the village. The only hard bit about school in Cuxton is turning eleven.

Primary in Cuxton is a two-school relay. Cuxton Community Infant School takes the youngest children and hands them to Cuxton Community Junior School, both on Bush Road and both part of the Academy of Cuxton Schools. There are two mainstream state primaries in the area, with an average end-of-primary maths score of 105 between them. The Department for Transport's modelled walk to a primary is about 14 minutes. Parents at the gate will stretch that to forty while they catch up on who's selling. Halling Primary School in the next village along is the obvious alternative for families who live nearer that end.

Ofsted has graded 37 of the 40 schools with a published grade across Medway as good or better, which is nearly all of them. Four are outstanding, one requires improvement and two are inadequate. These figures cover the whole local authority, not Cuxton alone, so they tell you about the pool your child will be drawn from, not about the gate at the end of your road. Another 47 settings across Medway hold no published grade yet, which is a gap in the paperwork, not a judgement on the schools.

Secondary is where the school run gets longer. There is no secondary in the village, and the modelled journey is about 53 minutes on foot, about 26 by public transport and about 14 by car. That is modelled data from 2019, and bus services change faster than roads do. Leigh Academy Strood and Maritime Academy are among the secondaries in the wider area, and which one suits depends on the child as much as the address. Most Cuxton parents learn the secondary admissions timetable by heart about a year before they expected to.

A school's name on the local list is not a place in its classroom. Admissions follow the council's rules, not the estate agent's brochure, and a house near the right school still has to win on distance, siblings and whatever else the policy says that year. Check the current admission arrangements for the specific address before you exchange, not after the offer letter arrives. Buyers who treat "near a good school" as the same thing as "got into a good school" find out the difference in spring.

Schools are one of Cuxton's real strengths. The primaries are on the doorstep, the wider Medway pool is almost entirely good or better, and the only real cost is the longer journey once secondary starts.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
