The schools are one of the better arguments for living here. Two primaries in the town, one secondary, and a ring of village schools around the edges. Most of the graded schools across the county come out good or better. Very few come out at the bottom. Choice is limited, quality is not, and those two things are not the same problem.
Ofsted has published an overall grade for 172 settings across Devon, and 138 of them, roughly eight in ten, sit at good or better. Three hold Outstanding, 31 require improvement and three are rated inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county rather than Cullompton alone, so treat them as the climate rather than the forecast for one particular gate. A further 135 settings carry no published overall grade at all, which means not yet inspected under the current arrangements and nothing more sinister than that.
Naming a school is not the same as getting into it. Places are allocated by the local authority's admissions rules, and living close buys you a better position in the queue rather than a seat in the classroom. Anyone treating a postcode as an entitlement finds out on offer day, when the allocation turns out to be entirely indifferent to what was paid for the house.
Cullompton Community College is the town's secondary, on its present site since 1964 and fully comprehensive since 1979, and it takes most of the local teenagers. St Andrew's Primary School and Willowbank Primary School cover the primary years inside the town. Out in the surrounding parishes sit a set of small village primaries, including Hemyock Primary School, and Uffculme School gives the area a second secondary within reach. Village schools of that size are a decision rather than a default: parents either want their child in a year group everybody knows by name, or they want the opposite, and there is not much middle ground.
One secondary also means one conversation. Everything that other towns spread across three sets of school gates happens in the same car park here, with the same forty parents, for seven years.
Check the current grade of the specific school your address points at, because a county figure is an average and your child attends a building. That done, this is one of the town's real strengths: the local record holds up, the options are few but sound, and schooling is not the thing that will make you look elsewhere.
