Is Cuffley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Cuffley.

Cuffley is safe, by a wide margin. Crime runs at well under half the borough's rate. Almost nobody here is out of work. The categories that stand out are the ones aimed at houses and cars. Put a decent lock on the side gate and sleep well.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded 290 crimes in Cuffley's neighbourhood areas between June 2025 and May 2026, a published rate of about 40 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 60% below the average for Welwyn Hatfield. Both figures are published by the police over the same twelve months, and the gap between them is wide.

In numbers, the Welwyn Hatfield rate was about 101 crimes per 1,000 residents over that year, against Cuffley's 40. Any reader who lives elsewhere in the borough and finds their own street fine should know that the village runs at well under half that level.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is a low-density village of about 1,740 people per square kilometre, averaged across its areas, with unemployment at about 2% and about 2% of households overcrowded. Families with this much room to themselves and steady jobs tend to make up places with short crime reports, though none of those figures explains on its own why the rate is low. Cuffley has a parish church nearby, a conservation area next door and a Scout camp in the woods, and none of them turns up in a crime report.

The crime mix needs handling with care, because 290 crimes is a small enough total that a handful either way moves a share by several points. With that in mind, violence and sexual offences made up about 32% of Cuffley's recorded crime against about 35% nationally, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, so the local share is close to the national one. Anti-social behaviour was about 19%, against 16% nationally. Burglary was about 11% against roughly 4% nationally, and vehicle crime about 11% against 5%. Other theft came in at about 9% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson at about 7%, level with the national share. In a village made of big detached houses and driveways, the two shares that stand above the national ones are burglary and the cars outside. The police's online crime map shows recorded incidents street by street, and a few minutes on the road you are buying in will tell you more than any average.

After a report, the figures cover the whole county force. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 40% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide outcomes that describe what happens once a crime is reported anywhere in Hertfordshire, which is a separate question from how often crime happens in Cuffley. A burglary victim in the village faces the same county odds as one in any town.

Safety is one of Cuffley's real strengths. The crime that does turn up goes after property far more than people, and the overall level is low enough that most residents are more likely to talk about it than see it.
