What are the schools like in Clevedon?

For anyone buying or renting in Clevedon.

Clevedon's schools are solid without being spectacular. One secondary serves the whole town. Six primaries feed into it. Across the graded schools in and around the town, about four in ten reach good or better, two hold the top inspection grade, and none sits in the bottom one. Reassuring enough for a buyer, not the kind of record that makes people move across a county for it.

Secondary provision runs through Clevedon School, a comprehensive taking pupils from the town and the rural patch around it, with a sixth form attached so teenagers do not have to leave at sixteen. The primary end is spread across the town, with All Saints Church of England Primary School, Mary Elton Primary School, St John the Evangelist Church School, St Nicholas Chantry Church of England Primary School and Yeo Moor Primary School all inside the town, and Tickenham Church of England Primary School serving the edge. Several carry a church affiliation, which shapes admissions as much as geography does and is worth understanding before you fall for a house. The footballer Jack Butland went through Yeo Moor Primary School and Clevedon School, for anyone who measures a place by the alumni.

A word on the thing every buyer gets wrong. Living near a school you like is not the same as getting into it. Admissions run on distance, siblings and, for the church schools, faith criteria, and the line moves year to year depending on how many families ahead of you had the same idea. An estate agent will happily point at a well-regarded school two streets away and let you draw your own conclusions. The conclusions are drawn by an admissions formula that has never seen the property listing and does not care how much you paid. Check the actual catchment for the specific year, not the reputation, and check it against the school directly rather than the brochure.

None of the numbers above should be read as a guarantee for any one school. Inspection grades shift when a school is reinspected, church schools apply their own admission rules, and a good rating three years ago is not a promise about the classroom your child walks into. Treat the town's overall picture as the useful signal and the individual school as a separate piece of homework.

The verdict is a comfortable middle. Clevedon gives families a full run from reception to sixth form without leaving town, a couple of standout performers, and nothing in the danger zone, which is more than plenty of places manage. It is a reason to feel fine about raising children here, not a reason on its own to buy.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
