Is Clerkenwell a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Clerkenwell.

Clerkenwell is not a safe area on paper, and the paper is a fair account of the pavements. About 604 crimes are recorded a year for every 1,000 residents. Islington as a whole records about 188. Theft leads the list. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally.

Police.uk records 15,189 crimes in Clerkenwell in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 604 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 222% above the Islington average. Those are the published figures. Dividing the count by the number of people who sleep here won't reproduce the rate, because the statistical areas behind it use a different population base.

Put the two numbers side by side. Islington, the borough Clerkenwell belongs to, records about 188 crimes per 1,000 residents, and Clerkenwell records about 604. Islington isn't a sleepy suburb, and Clerkenwell still makes it look like a cathedral close.

As for the streets themselves, about 18,100 people live in each square kilometre on average, unemployment is about 4% and about 8% of households are overcrowded. That describes a crowded, mostly working neighbourhood, and none of it explains the crime figure. Low unemployment and a modest overcrowding rate are not what a high crime rate usually comes with, which points to the crowds passing through more than the people who live here.

The mix gives the game away. "Other theft" is about 22% of recorded crime in Clerkenwell against about 7% nationally, and theft from the person is about 15% against about 2%. Shoplifting is about 15% against 8%. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury and is the biggest category almost everywhere, is about 16% here against about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour is about 7% against 16%, and public order offences are close to the national share, about 6% against 7%. Clerkenwell's most famous old crime was the Cock Lane Ghost, a deception staged nearby that Dr Johnson took a great interest in. Today's thieves don't bother with the theatre, and a crowded pavement and an unzipped bag do the job. If the flat you're viewing is near a busy pub corner or a station exit, walk the route home at closing time first.

Then there's what happens after a report. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and closes about 53% of cases with no suspect identified, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026. Those are force figures for the whole of London, and they place the Met 33rd of 42 forces on charging. They tell you whether a crime gets solved, which is a different question from whether it happens.

Clerkenwell is a poor bet on safety. The risk falls mostly on your phone and your bag, and it comes with living where London's crowds pass through every day.
