What are the schools like in Churchdown?

For anyone buying or renting in Churchdown.

Churchdown's schools are strong, and the village has its own secondaries so families don't have to commute for them. The primaries test above the expected standard in maths. The two secondaries post solid exam results. Across the county, nearly nine in ten graded settings are good or better. For a family, few places this size come as well stocked.

The Department for Education's Key Stage 2 results give the area's two mainstream state primaries an average maths score of 103. The names a Churchdown family will meet include Churchdown Village Infant and Junior Schools, Churchdown Parton Manor Infant and Junior Schools and St Mary's Catholic Primary School. Two of those come as separate infant and junior schools, so a child can change school halfway through primary without the family moving an inch.

At secondary level the area has two mainstream state schools, Chosen Hill School and Churchdown School. Their Attainment 8 score, the Department for Education's measure of results across a pupil's best eight subjects, averages about 50 weighted by pupil numbers. Teenagers here lose the oldest excuse in secondary education, because there is no school bus to blame for being late.

Ofsted has rated 136 of the 156 graded settings across Gloucestershire good or better, which is nearly nine in ten. Nine are outstanding, 19 require improvement and one is inadequate. A further 95 settings in the county have no published grade yet, and that tells you nothing either way. The county figure covers everything from Cotswold villages to Gloucester's inner streets, so for Churchdown it sets the backdrop and little more.

Gloucestershire County Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so a house round the corner from Chosen Hill School or Churchdown Village Junior School secures nothing on its own. The council's site publishes how far the last child admitted lived from each school in recent years. Look that up for the schools you want before you offer, because it is a better guide than any map. Living close helps your case, but the council's letter makes the decision.

Schooling is one of Churchdown's real strengths. Good primaries, two secondaries within the village and a county where good is the norm add up to a list most families would happily settle for.
