What are the schools like in Chiswell Green?

For anyone buying or renting in Chiswell Green.

Schools are one of the better reasons to pay Chiswell Green's prices. The local primaries post strong maths results. Across the county, about nine in ten graded schools are good or outstanding. Secondary school is a bus ride or a lift away. Parents who budgeted for the house tend to find the education is the part that delivers.

There are four mainstream state primaries around here, and their pupils averaged a scaled score of about 106 in the end-of-primary maths tests. The primaries on the local list include Killigrew Primary and Nursery School, How Wood Primary and Nursery School and Park Street Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. In the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling, the nearest primary is about 13 minutes' walk from the typical home, or 8 minutes by car. For a place where most people drive everywhere, that is one of the few journeys a seven-year-old can do on foot with a parent and a scooter.

Hertfordshire County Council's schools are graded well overall. Ofsted has graded 203 of the county's 227 graded settings good or outstanding, which is about nine in ten, and 40 of them outstanding. At the other end, 21 were rated requires improvement and 3 inadequate. The figure covers the whole of Hertfordshire, so it describes the county Chiswell Green belongs to, and a particular school's report is a better guide than the county average. The rest of the county list holds settings that have yet to receive a published grade, and they sit outside those totals altogether.

Places are handed out under Hertfordshire County Council's published admissions rules, and living within sight of a primary's gates does not by itself secure a seat in its reception class. Each school's oversubscription criteria, and how far away the last child admitted lived in recent years, are published by the county, and that distance is the number to look up for any school a house purchase depends on. Families who buy on the strength of a walk to the gates and skip that step tend to discover the rules in the spring the offers arrive, along with everyone else who skipped it.

Secondary school is a longer trip. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 34 minutes' walk away, 21 minutes by public transport and 12 by car. For most families that settles who drives in the mornings for the next seven years, and in a place with a lot of two-car households the answer is rarely the bus. One nearby independent school has closed and is no longer an option.

Chiswell Green's schools are a real strength. The primaries perform well, the county grades are solid, and the main cost is the drive to secondary school.
