Is Chiswell Green a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chiswell Green.

Chiswell Green is reasonably safe, though it records more crime than the district around it. The rate runs a little above the St Albans average. The mix of offences looks much like everywhere else. Unemployment and overcrowding are both low. It is an ordinary suburb with ordinary trouble, at a slightly higher volume than the neighbours.

Police.uk records put Chiswell Green at about 93 crimes per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, roughly 14% above the St Albans district average. That rate covers 1,196 recorded crimes over the same twelve months. Both are published figures for the area as a whole, and they say nothing about how any one street compares.

Across the St Albans district, the published rate over the same year was about 81 crimes per 1,000 residents. Chiswell Green's 93 sits above it, and the gap is real. The district it is being measured against is one of the more comfortable parts of Hertfordshire, so the area comes off worse in the comparison than it would against most of the country.

The neighbourhood producing those numbers is low-rise suburbia, with about 2,850 people per square kilometre on average across its small statistical areas. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. Those are descriptions of the place and say nothing on their own about why crime happens where it does.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 40% of recorded crime here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is a broad legal category which includes common assault where nobody was injured, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 18%, close to the national 16%. The clearest difference is other theft, about 11% of the local total against 7% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5%, criminal damage and arson about 7% against 7%, and public order offences about 5% against 7%. Police.uk's street-level map shows where reported crimes cluster, and checking the roads around a particular house takes five minutes. Most of the mix tracks the national pattern within a few points, and the theft line is the one that stands out.

After a crime is reported, the figure that matters belongs to Hertfordshire Constabulary, the force covering the whole county. Over the year to May 2026 it charged a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces. About 40% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. Those are county-wide numbers about what happens after the event, and they measure the police more than the place.

Chiswell Green lands in the middle on safety. The crime rate is higher than the district's and the offences are the usual kind, which makes it fine for most people and unremarkable for everyone else.
