The schools within reach are good, and most people living in Carlyon Bay will never use one. Across Cornwall, roughly four in five graded settings hold a good or better rating. Three are outstanding. About one household in eight here is a couple with children. Strong schools, in a place that mostly watches the school run from behind a hedge.
Ofsted has published an overall grade for 120 settings across Cornwall, and 95 of those come out good or better, which is just under four in five. Three carry outstanding. Twenty are marked as requiring improvement and 5 as inadequate. A further 113 settings hold no published overall grade at all, which means not yet inspected under current arrangements rather than inspected and found wanting, and folding them into the totals would be dishonest arithmetic. All of these counts cover the whole of Cornwall rather than the specific schools serving this stretch of coast, so read them as the county's weather, not this postcode's forecast.
Living near a school gate has never been the same as walking through it. Places are decided by the admissions authority's rules, in which proximity is a factor rather than a promise, and the rules are honest about that even when the sales particulars are not. Anyone buying with one particular school in mind should check that school's own admissions position for the year the child actually starts, rather than the year somebody once heard about a friend getting in.
Carlyon Bay has no school of its own, so the options sit in the villages and streets around St Austell. Charlestown Primary School serves the harbour village next door, and five more primaries are spread around the town. Secondary means Penrice Academy or Poltair School, and Penrice has a scheduled monument in its grounds, a prehistoric standing stone called the Long Stone, which is a considerably better school field feature than most places manage. Cornwall College covers the further education end for anyone staying on. Everything on that list is a car journey, which in a place with this many driveways surprises nobody.
Of everything this address has to recommend it, the schools are among the genuinely strong parts: the county's graded settings land good or better far more often than they do not, and the irony is that the households paying most to be here finished with parents' evenings a long time ago.
