What's the area around Bushey like?

For anyone buying or renting in Bushey.

Bushey has a park near almost every front door and water a short stroll beyond it. Green space is close to every street. Ponds and streams are close too. The high street runs on shops and offices, with a modest number of pubs. None of the land is formally protected, and it is green all the same.

Bushey postcodes are on average about 175 metres from the nearest public green space, with about 18 green spaces within a kilometre. The Rose Garden in Bushey is on the national register of parks and gardens, and Aldenham House and Bentley Priory appear on the same register nearby. Most residents have somewhere green to walk without needing to plan it.

Water is close as well. Bushey postcodes are on average about 340 metres from the nearest blue space, with about 24 ponds, lakes or watercourses within a kilometre. Bushey Heath has a conservation area called The Lake.

Cycling further afield takes more effort. The National Cycle Network is on average about 2.2 kilometres from a Bushey postcode, and only about 6% of postcodes are close to it. Most local cyclists reach the national network by road first.

Among rated premises across the wider area there are 288 shops, 13 pubs and 41 restaurants, alongside 424 offices. Offices outnumber shops, and the pubs are few, so the high street runs mostly on weekday business.

On air quality, Hertsmere council's area averaged about 7.8 micrograms of fine particles per cubic metre of air in 2024.

The character comes from old common land and old estates. Bushey Heath was waste ground handed to local landowners during the Napoleonic Wars to grow food, and the developers who later built on it liked the views more than the farmers had. Conservation areas at Bushey High Street, Melbourne Road, Letchmore Heath and Patchetts Green and Delrow keep the older parts recognisable, and Oxhey sits on the Watford side. Stanmore, Radlett and Elstree are the neighbouring places, and the scheduled earthworks of Grim's Ditch run through the countryside between them.

Private gardens add plenty more. Across Bushey's neighbourhoods there are about 96,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents, so most households have outdoor space of their own on top of the parks.

The business rates list counts 400 rateable premises in Bushey itself, with shops and offices the largest groups. These are premises on the valuation list, so some may be empty or between tenants, and they show what the town was built to hold rather than who is trading this week.

Of the 122 food premises rated for hygiene, about 83% hold the top score of five and about 3% are rated low. Eating out in Bushey is a safe bet.

No area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland overlaps Bushey. The green space is ordinary parkland, gardens and fields, and it is close to almost every home.

The surroundings are among the best things about Bushey. Parks, water and gardens are all close at hand, and a dog walker here barely has to plan a route.
