What are the schools like in Burnham-on-Sea?

For anyone buying or renting in Burnham-on-Sea.

Solid primaries, and a secondary that lives somewhere else. Six state primaries sit inside the area. Only one state secondary does, and it is a drive rather than a stroll. Maths results at the end of primary come out a little above the middle. This is a town that handles the first eleven years of education well and then hands your teenager a bus timetable.

At primary level the town splits the job in two, which is the first thing worth knowing. Burnham-On-Sea Infant School takes the early years and St Andrew's Church Junior School picks up from there, so a family here does two school runs, two sets of gate acquaintances and two lots of admissions paperwork before a child turns eleven. St Joseph's Catholic Primary and Nursery School covers the town as an all-through primary, and Berrow Primary Church Academy sits out toward the northern edge for anyone living that way. Across the six state primaries in the area, the average Key Stage 2 maths score is 101.9. That is a competent, unremarkable number, and competent is what most parents are actually after. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times put a primary at around 10 minutes on foot and 7 by car, which is the genuine convenience here: the walk to school is a walk, not a logistics operation.

Secondary is a single-option affair. The King Alfred School an Academy is the state secondary serving the area, and its pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score is 40.5. The modelled journey is about 9 minutes by car, 19 by public transport and 25 on foot, which in practice means the car for the first year and the bus after that, because no fourteen-year-old walks 25 minutes in Somerset rain twice a day. Having one secondary makes the decision simple and removes any pretence of choice, which is either a relief or a problem depending on how much you enjoy comparing open evenings.

For the wider quality picture, Ofsted's grades cover the whole of Somerset rather than this town alone, so read them as county weather rather than local forecast. Of the 140 settings across the county carrying a published overall grade, 101 are good or better, which is just over seven in ten. Five hold outstanding, which across an entire county is a thin haul. Thirty-two require improvement and seven are inadequate. A further 81 settings hold no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected under the current framework rather than anything worse, and folding them into the arithmetic would be dishonest.

The usual caveat applies with more force than usual. Naming a school near a house is not the same as securing a place in it. Somerset runs the admissions, oversubscription is settled by the published criteria rather than by proximity alone, and no estate agent listing that says "catchment" is making a promise anybody is obliged to keep. Check the current admissions arrangements for the specific school and the specific year before letting it influence which street you buy on, because the arrangements change and the listing does not.

The other schools in and around the area, including a specialist setting at Sedgemoor Manor School and a cluster of village primaries in the surrounding parishes, fill in the gaps for families on the edges. Most people in Burnham-on-Sea itself will only ever consider the four or five closest, and the geography is small enough that the difference between them is measured in minutes.

Schools land on the better side of ordinary here. The primaries are close, plural and performing respectably, the single secondary does a workmanlike job, and nothing in the numbers suggests either a reason to move here for the education or a reason to avoid the place because of it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
