Good, and the arguments at the school gate are about admissions, not quality. More than four in five graded settings in the county are good or better. The nearest primary is a short walk for most families. Secondary school means a bus or a lift. The schools aren't the weak point here. The admissions system is.
Ofsted has graded 122 settings across West Sussex, and 103 of them are good or better, well over four in every five. Of those, 11 are outstanding. At the other end, 17 require improvement and 2 are inadequate. These figures cover the whole county, not Broadbridge Heath's own streets, so they describe the pool families are choosing from rather than a promise about the school at the end of the road. Another 125 settings hold no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about how good they are.
Distance is the easy part. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 9 minutes' walk from the typical home, or 7 minutes by car. Secondary is further: about 12 minutes by car and 22 by public transport, and roughly 42 minutes on foot. Parents who pictured teenagers strolling to school will find themselves driving more than they planned.
Now the caveat estate agents leave out. A school being nearby, or appearing on a list like this one, doesn't mean your child gets a place there. Admissions run on the council's rules and the school's own criteria, and each year's intake decides where the effective boundary falls. Checking the admissions arrangements for the specific school and the specific address before buying is dull and entirely worth it. Parents who skip it tend to learn the rules in spring, from the offer letter.
A few names help to sketch the choices. Shelley Primary School carries the name of the poet born just north of the village, which is about as much Romantic literature as most primary schools get. Kilnwood Vale Primary School serves one of Horsham's newer developments, where families arrived with the houses. For secondary, the names that come up are Tanbridge House School and Bohunt Horsham, and The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham is also in the local mix. The rest of the primary list covers the villages and Horsham estates around it, with church schools, community schools and a couple of independents. Parents have plenty to choose from, and plenty to argue about over dinner.
Schools are one of Broadbridge Heath's real strengths: the county's standard is high and the primaries are close. What needs work is the admissions homework, and that's up to the buyer.
