What are the schools like in Bridgwater?

For anyone buying or renting in Bridgwater.

Schools in Bridgwater are respectable without being the reason anyone moves here. Primary results sit a shade above the scaled score average. Five state secondaries cover the whole area. Most graded settings across the county come in good or better. It is a system that quietly works, which is the least glamorous compliment in education and also the most useful one.

At primary level there are 24 mainstream state primaries in the area, and their key stage 2 maths results average a scaled score of about 104. That is above average rather than remarkable, and it is spread across a lot of schools rather than concentrated in one that everyone fights over. Somerset Bridge Primary School and Northgate Primary School sit in the town itself, with village primaries at Cannington, Puriton, Westonzoyland and Woolavington covering the outlying parishes. Westover Green Community School and Autism Centre puts specialist provision on the same site as its mainstream classes, which matters enormously to the families it serves and is worth knowing about before you start ranking schools by results alone.

Secondary is where the choice narrows. Five mainstream state secondaries serve the area, with a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 42 between them. Haygrove School and Chilton Trinity School are the main town options, with Brymore Academy and Robert Blake School alongside them. Bridgwater was picked as the first town in the South West outside Bristol for the Building Schools for the Future programme, which was going to relocate and rebuild a combined Haygrove and Penrose school. In July 2010 several components of that programme were cancelled and the rest went under review. The town has been getting on with it since.

Beyond sixteen, the town's further education campus sits on Bath Road, and a specialist nuclear skills hub launched there in February 2018 to train staff for Hinkley Point C. That is an unusually direct line from local training to a local employer, and it is the single most distinctive thing about post-sixteen education here. Most towns this size offer bricklaying and business studies. This one offers reactor work.

On inspection grades, Ofsted has graded 140 settings across the Somerset authority, of which 101 are good or better. That is roughly seven in ten. Five hold outstanding, 32 require improvement and 7 are rated inadequate. A further 81 settings hold no published grade at all, either because they have not been inspected yet or because their grade has lapsed, and they should not be read as good or bad. Those counts cover the entire county, not just Bridgwater and its villages, so treat them as the weather rather than the forecast for any particular school gate.

The usual caution applies harder here than most people expect. Naming a school is not the same as getting into it, admission runs on the authority's own criteria rather than on which side of a road you live, and the popular schools fill up in the way popular schools always do. Check the current admissions arrangements and the current inspection report for any school you are serious about, because both change and neither cares what an area guide said. If you are buying with a specific school in mind, confirm before you exchange rather than after.

Taken together, the schools here land a little better than average and refuse to be interesting about it. Primary provision is broad, spread across the town and the surrounding villages, and does the job; secondary choice is thinner and the results are ordinary; the college does something genuinely unusual. Nobody relocates to Bridgwater for the education, and nobody with school-age children has much cause to rule it out on those grounds either.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
