What are the schools like in Bow, London?

For anyone buying or renting in Bow, London.

Bow's schools are very good, and the borough around them has almost nothing graded below good. Nearly every graded school in Tower Hamlets is good or outstanding. A third of them are outstanding. None is inadequate. In Bow, the school question isn't whether there's a good school but how close you live to it.

Across Tower Hamlets, which is the authority Ofsted reports for, 37 of the 39 schools with a published overall grade are rated good or better, so almost all of them. Thirteen are outstanding, 24 good and two require improvement, and none is inadequate. Another 44 settings have no published overall grade yet, so they tell you nothing about quality either way. These counts cover the whole borough, and Bow is one corner of it, so the borough figure only tells you that the odds are good.

Bow's own schools carry the district's names. Bow School and Old Ford Primary, now a Paradigm academy, both take the name of the ground they stand on. Central Foundation Girls' School is on Bow Road. Chisenhale, Malmesbury, Olga and St Agnes primaries are spread through the streets to the north and south. None of these names comes with an inspection grade here, and a place at any of them goes by Tower Hamlets' published admissions rules, so living on the same street as one doesn't secure a place there. The borough publishes each school's oversubscription rules and the distance the last place went to on its admissions pages, and that is the one figure worth checking against a particular flat. Old Ford Primary in particular gets a lot of parents moving to the street it's named after.

Distances are short. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 puts the nearest primary school about a five-minute walk from the average home in Bow, and the nearest secondary about eight minutes on foot. Most children in Bow can walk to school, and the car drop-off that clogs other parts of London is mostly missing here.

The schools serve fewer families than you might expect. At the 2021 Census, about 17% of Bow's households were couples with children and 12% were lone parents. The rest are young renters and single people who will never look at a school's Ofsted report.

Schools are one of Bow's real strengths. The real decision for a parent here is which of several good schools nearby to apply to.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
