Is Bow, London a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Bow, London.

Bow is safer than the borough around it. Its crime rate comes in below the Tower Hamlets figure. Violence is a smaller share of local crime than the national average. Pickpocketing and anti-social behaviour make up a bigger share. Bow is a busy inner-London district with a nuisance problem, and the violence most people worry about makes up less of its crime than it does nationally.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 11,896 crimes in Bow in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for the district is about 142 crimes per 1,000 people, roughly 9% below the average for Tower Hamlets. The published rate is worked out on a different population base from the resident headcount, so it shouldn't be recalculated from the raw count.

Tower Hamlets as a whole runs at about 156 crimes per 1,000 people over the same twelve months, against Bow's 142. Both figures are high by national standards, but this is inner London. Bow is the calmer end of a busy borough.

Bow is also extremely dense. The average neighbourhood holds about 27,000 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 5%, and about 16% of households are overcrowded. These describe the kind of district the crime figures come from, not the cause of them. Bow is a district of flats and buses, and plenty of people are out on the street at any hour.

The mix of crimes is more useful than the headline rate. Violence and sexual offences make up about 25% of Bow's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 22%, against 16% nationally. Theft from the person is about 7%, against 2%. Drug offences are about 7% against 4%, and vehicle crime about 7% against 5%. Other theft is 7%, about the same as nationally. In Bow the noise and the pickpocketing run high, and violence is below the national share.

Catching anyone is a weaker story, and it's the Metropolitan Police's figure for the whole of London, not Bow's own. The force charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of the 42 forces. In about 53% of its cases, nobody is ever identified. That figure measures how a report gets dealt with and says nothing about how likely you are to need to make one. The more useful check for a particular flat is the street-level crime map on the police's own website, read over several months for the block and the street it faces. A flat on a main road near a station will look different from one on a back street a few minutes away.

Bow is safe for inner London. It is safer than its borough and lighter on violence than the country as a whole, with more anti-social behaviour and pickpocketing than usual.
