Who lives in Botany Bay?

For anyone buying or renting in Botany Bay.

Botany Bay is mostly home to owner-occupiers in their middle years, earning comfortably. About two in three own. The typical resident is in their early forties. Households are more often couples and single people than young families. The hamlet's own name covers a far larger population, because the figures take in the whole district around it.

The 2021 census is the source for every population figure here, and it counts the whole EN2 postcode district: 35,740 people in 14,881 households, taking in Gordon Hill, Clay Hill, Crews Hill, Bulls Cross and World's End. About 65% of households own their home, about 24% rent privately and about 10% rent from a social landlord. With 35,740 residents, Botany Bay counts as a hamlet only in name.

The typical resident is 41, and about 28% of people are aged 25 to 44. That puts the district in its middle years, with mortgage holders and school runs ahead of both students and retirement.

The Office for National Statistics modelled gross household income, before tax, at about £77,000 across the district for the financial year to March 2023. That is enough to sustain a north Enfield mortgage, though it leaves little room for anything else.

About 30% of households are one person living alone, and about 13% are a single pensioner, who are part of that 30%. Couples with dependent children make up about 21% of households and lone parents about 14%. The mix runs from a pensioner in a bungalow to a family stretching a semi, with plenty of single people in the flats.

About 43% of adults hold a degree-level qualification, about 16% have no qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. With so few students, there is no university nearby setting the tone, and most people here finished their education some time ago.

Health is good on the census measure, with about 85% of residents describing their own health as good or very good. Across the London Borough of Enfield, the rate of deaths from preventable causes is better than England's, and smoking is at a level similar to England's. Those two comparisons are for the whole borough, and say nothing about this district in particular.

Botany Bay's residents are an ordinary mix. Most own their homes and are comfortably off, with a broad spread of household types and nothing that marks the district out from the rest of outer London.
