The schools are the best reason to pay what Berrylands costs. Every graded school in the borough is good or better. Eight are outstanding. None needs improvement. The local primaries post strong maths results. For many families here, the mortgage is really a school fee with a house attached.
There are three mainstream state primaries around Berrylands, and their pupils average a Key Stage 2 maths score of about 107. Christ Church CofE Primary School is the one most families mean when they say "the local school". Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School is officially in Tolworth, though Berrylands claims it, and most of its pupils live there. Knollmead Primary School is the third primary on the local list. The Christ Church school does some of its sport on the clay courts of the neighbouring tennis club, founded in 1881 as the Berrylands Lawn Tennis Club, and borrows its squash courts too. Somewhere in Berrylands, a seven-year-old has a better backhand than the parent paying the mortgage.
Ofsted has graded 22 schools and settings across Kingston upon Thames, and all 22 are rated good or outstanding. Eight of them are outstanding, and none is graded requires improvement or inadequate. Another 24 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, so they are left out of that count. Across a whole local authority, a perfect record on the graded list is unusual. People who move here worrying about schools will soon find they have nothing to worry about.
Places are given out under the council's published admissions rules, and living near a particular school does not guarantee a place there. Read those rules for the specific school, and look at how far away the last child admitted lived, as early in the house hunt as possible. In the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling, the nearest primary was about an eight-minute walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about 15 minutes. The model measures distance to the nearest school, not to the school a child gets into. Parents tend to find that out in the April the offers arrive.
Berrylands' schools are one of the strongest things about it, as good on paper as a family could reasonably ask for. The only hard part is the price of the house you need to get into them.
