What are the schools like in Ash, Dover District?

For anyone buying or renting in Ash, Dover District.

Good, and at primary age they're close by. Nine in ten of Kent's graded schools are good or better. The village has its own primary. Secondary school is a drive away, not a walk. The teaching isn't the problem here. Getting there is.

Ash Cartwright and Kelsey Church of England Primary School is the one with the village's name on it, and most families here start with it. There are nine state primaries in the area, and their average end-of-primary maths score is about 104. Wingham Primary School is the obvious alternative next door, and St Faith's at Ash School gives the village a second option on its own doorstep. Getting to a primary is manageable: modelled journey times put the nearest one about 20 minutes' walk away, or about 9 minutes by car. That walk only suits parents who own sensible shoes and a good raincoat, and most of the ones here do.

Ofsted's grades cover the whole of Kent, not only Ash, so read them as the standard of the local authority rather than a verdict on the village. Of the 245 Kent settings with a published grade, 221 are good or outstanding, which is roughly nine in every ten. There are 38 outstanding. At the other end, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. On those numbers, a family moving here from most places will find the schools at least as good as what they left.

Secondary school is where the planning comes in. The nearest options are Sir Roger Manwood's School and Sandwich Technology School, and modelled journey times put a secondary about 18 minutes away by car, about 44 minutes by public transport and around 98 minutes on foot. Nobody walks. A teenager relying on the bus learns to be patient. Parents who bought for the primary and forgot to think about year seven find out their commute now includes somebody else's.

No named school here guarantees your child a place, whatever the listing says about being "close to good schools". Admissions depend on the council's criteria and on who else applies that year, and the priority lines move. Check with the council before you commit, not after you've exchanged. Being able to see a school from your bedroom window counts for less than parents think.

The schools are one of Ash's real strengths. The primaries are good and close, and the secondaries are good too. You just need to budget for the drive.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
