What are the schools like in Arlesey?

For anyone buying or renting in Arlesey.

Arlesey's schools are a strength, and the district around the town has the inspection results to show it. Nearly nine in ten of the schools inspectors have graded are good or better. A primary school is within walking distance for most families. Getting to secondary school is a longer trip, and more of it happens in a car. Parents here have more reason to study the admissions rules than to worry about standards.

Central Bedfordshire has 52 schools rated good or better out of the 59 that Ofsted has given a published grade, so close to nine in ten pass. One of those 52 is rated outstanding. Five more require improvement and two are inadequate. Another 43 settings in the district have no published grade yet. Being ungraded says nothing either way about their quality, and none of them are counted in the totals above. These numbers cover the whole council area, which takes in much more than Arlesey. They describe the district's schools in general and say nothing about a particular classroom.

The school most closely tied to the town is Gothic Mede Academy, a primary. The Department for Transport modelled journey times in 2019. On its figures the nearest primary is about a 14-minute walk from the average Arlesey home and the nearest secondary about 34 minutes on foot, 18 by public transport or 11 by car. Those bus times are the most likely to have changed since 2019, because bus routes have been cut since then. Places are given out under Central Bedfordshire's published admissions rules. Living close to Gothic Mede, or to any other school, makes a place more likely but does not secure one, and the rules on distance, siblings and feeder schools decide it. The council's admissions team will say which schools an address is in catchment for, and that is the one check worth making about any particular house.

Arlesey was a brickmaking town for generations. Some of its families spent decades turning clay into walls and have since put their effort into getting their children into the right school. Nobody in town ends up having to explain why they chose these schools.

Schools are one of Arlesey's real strengths. The district's record leaves parents with little to worry about, apart from making sure their house is on the right side of the admissions rules.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
