Is Arborfield Garrison a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Arborfield Garrison.

Arborfield Garrison is less safe than its tidy new streets suggest. Crime runs well above the Wokingham average. The mix of offences is ordinary. Shoplifting is the one that stands out. Fresh brickwork and a neat verge do not come with a lower crime rate.

Police records for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put the Arborfield Garrison area at about 62 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 30% above the average for the Wokingham local authority. That covers 860 recorded crimes across the area over the twelve months. Both are published figures, and they cover the wider area, the surrounding villages included, not only the new estates on the old army land.

Set side by side, the gap is plain. The area records about 62 crimes per 1,000 people; the Wokingham borough as a whole records about 48. Wokingham is a low-crime borough by most standards, so being above its average is not the same as being a rough place. It does mean the "quiet Berkshire village" line in a listing is doing more marketing than measuring.

The neighbourhood texture does not look like the usual setting for a high crime figure. The area averages about 1,870 people per square kilometre, unemployment sits at about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That describes a comfortable, working, well-housed place. None of these numbers explains the crime rate, and none should be read as its cause; they describe the kind of area the figures come from, which is exactly why the rate surprises people.

The mix of crime is mostly the national mix. Violence and sexual offences make up about 35% of the area's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally, and that category is the largest almost everywhere because it includes common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 17% here against 16% nationally, criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%, and public order offences about 6% against 7%. The two categories that sit above the national share are theft. Shoplifting makes up about 13% of recorded crime here against 8% nationally, and other theft about 9% against 7%. The pattern points at shops and property, not at people walking home.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is not flattering to anyone. Thames Valley Police, the force covering the area, charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That is a force-wide figure, not this area's own, and it measures what happens after a crime rather than how likely one is. It is still worth knowing before assuming the camera on the porch will bring anything back.

Arborfield Garrison is below average on safety: not dangerous, but carrying more crime than a comfortable corner of a low-crime borough should, with theft doing most of the damage. Buy for the house and the schools, and lock the shed.
