Who lives in Aldenham?

For anyone buying or renting in Aldenham.

Aldenham is mostly lived in by comfortably-off, middle-aged homeowners whose careers are well established. About three in four households own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-fifties. Household incomes are high, and four in ten adults have a degree. Young families make up a small share.

Census 2021 is the source for every population figure on this page. It counted about 850 people in 366 households, and about 74% of those households own their home. About 20% rent privately and about 6% rent from a social landlord. In a village where most homes are owned outright or carry a mortgage, renting is still more common than the prices would lead you to expect.

The median age is 55, and only about 14% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the years when most people are building careers and families. People in that age group are scarce in Aldenham because they can rarely afford the houses.

Typical household income was about £75,000 a year before tax in the financial year to March 2023. That figure comes from the Office for National Statistics, which models it across a neighbourhood wider than the village and averages it across the area. Sir Adolphus Dalrymple, soldier and politician, lived at Delrow House in the nineteenth century, and Aldenham still attracts people who made their money elsewhere.

About 25% of households are one person living alone, and about 13% of all households are a single pensioner, a group already counted within that 25%. Couples with dependent children make up about 17% of households and lone parents about 7%. Families with school-age children are a minority in the village.

About 41% of adults hold a degree-level qualification, and about 15% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students make up under 1% of residents, which is what you would expect in a village with no university and no cheap rooms to rent. Aldenham has more graduates than most places, but it also has a share of people with no qualifications at all.

On this measure Aldenham does well. Most residents are established homeowners with high incomes and good health, and the main thing missing is younger households in their late twenties and thirties.
