Is Aldenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Aldenham.

Aldenham is about as safe as the rest of Hertsmere, and the village's wealth doesn't buy it a lower crime rate. Its rate is level with the borough's. Car crime takes up more of the total than it does nationally. The local force charges about the national share of cases. For a village this comfortable, that is a slightly disappointing result.

Police.uk recorded 132 crimes in the neighbourhood area covering Aldenham in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 91 per 1,000 people. That neighbourhood area is a statistical unit drawn wider than the village itself, so the figure includes the lanes and houses around it. To see where incidents cluster near a particular house, police.uk's street-level crime map is free to check.

Across the whole of Hertsmere, the rate for the same year was also about 91 per 1,000. The two figures are the same to the nearest whole number. Aldenham is exactly average for its borough.

The village is a long way from the kind of place usually blamed for crime. There are about 216 people per square kilometre, unemployment is under 2%, and about 1% of households are overcrowded. None of that causes crime or prevents it, and here it hasn't been enough to bring the rate below the borough's.

The mix is unusual, though the numbers are small. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, made up about 27% of crimes here against about 35% nationally, so that share is lower than usual. Anti-social behaviour was about 22% against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime was about 14% against 5% nationally, the biggest gap in the list. Burglary was about 7% against 4%, other theft 9% against 7%, and public order 8% against 7%. With only 132 crimes in the year, a few cars broken into on one street could move the vehicle share by several points. The mix describes one year, and the next year could look quite different. The pattern still fits a village full of parked cars and large homes that may be empty during the day.

Charging decisions are made across the whole force. Hertfordshire Constabulary charged a suspect in about 11% of the cases it closed in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 40% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures, and they show what tends to happen after a crime is reported, which is a separate question from how much crime there is.

Safety in Aldenham is middling, about level with Hertsmere as a whole. Car crime and burglary are the things to watch more closely, even though the overall rate is no worse than the borough's.
