Is Welwyn a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Welwyn.

Welwyn is a safe place to live by any reasonable measure. Recorded crime runs about a third below the rest of its borough. Unemployment is low. Overcrowding is rare. The worst of the borough's crime figures are made somewhere else.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded 318 crimes in Welwyn in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 66 per 1,000 residents and roughly 34% below the local-authority average. For a village with coaching-inn pubs and a motorway junction on its doorstep, that is a modest total.

Across the whole Welwyn Hatfield borough, the rate for the same year was about 100 per 1,000 residents, against Welwyn's 66. Whatever is pushing the borough's figure up, the village is pulling it down.

The neighbourhood itself is unremarkable in the ways that matter here. Average population density is about 2,445 people per square kilometre, unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 Census, and about 2% of households were overcrowded. These describe the setting and explain nothing about any individual crime, so anyone building a theory from them is doing it without evidence.

By category, anti-social behaviour and violence and sexual offences each make up about 28% of Welwyn's recorded crime, against about 16% and 35% across England and Wales. Other theft accounts for about 17% against 7% nationally, public order about 6% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 5% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 4% against 5%. Violence and sexual offences is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere, so Welwyn's share sitting below the national one is the reassuring part. With only 318 crimes in total, a few incidents can move any of these shares by several points, so a single bad summer could reshuffle the order. Anti-social behaviour leading the table in a village this size can mean very little more than a few complaints about the same few teenagers.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the whole force. Hertfordshire Constabulary charged a suspect in about 11% of cases over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, ranking 23rd of 42 forces. About 40% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. That is a county-wide figure, set by how the force works, and it says nothing about how often anything happens in Welwyn. It does tell you that a stolen bike from a Welwyn front garden has the odds of every other stolen bike in Hertfordshire.

Safety is one of Welwyn's real strengths. Crime is low and well below the borough around it, and for most households the biggest nuisance will be the evening jam on the motorway.
