What are the schools like in Tollesbury?

For anyone buying or renting in Tollesbury.

Tollesbury has good schools, and the hard part is getting to the secondary. The village primary is a few minutes' walk from most homes. Primary maths results around here are above average. Almost nine in ten schools across the county are rated good or better. Secondary school means a drive or a long bus ride.

There are three state primary schools in the area, and their pupils average a maths score of about 107 at the end of key stage 2. Tollesbury School is the village primary, about six minutes away on the Department for Transport's 2019 model, whether you walk, drive or take the bus. Up the road, Tolleshunt D'Arcy St Nicholas Primary Academy serves the neighbouring village, which this page also covers. In a village this size, the primary is the nearest thing to a social life most new parents get.

Ofsted has given a grade to 246 schools and settings across Essex, and 218 of them, nearly nine in ten, are rated good or outstanding. Of the rest, 22 are outstanding, 23 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet. These are Essex-wide counts covering everything from coastal villages to large towns, so they describe the county system Tollesbury children go through more than the schools in the village.

Essex County Council allocates places by its published admissions rules, so living near Tollesbury School does not by itself secure a place there. Once a family is inside the system, the bigger question is distance. Plume School is the secondary among the schools listed for this area, and the 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 21 minutes away by car, about 35 minutes by public transport and nearly two hours on foot. With so few buses in the village, the council's school transport rules matter more here than in a town. Read them alongside the admissions criteria while you are still choosing a house. Families who move here for the estuary find out at eleven that the school run takes longer than the commute.

Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Bradwell-on-Sea and Ramsey Island face the same trade-off: the primary is close and the secondary is not. The 2019 public transport times are the ones to check against the current timetable, because rural bus services have been cut since those figures were modelled, while the drive times have changed very little.

Schools are one of Tollesbury's real strengths. Primary results are strong, the county's schools are mostly good, and the only real complaint is how far it is to the secondary.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
