Is Thatcham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Thatcham.

Thatcham is safe, in the unremarkable way that makes for a dull local news page. Crime runs below the West Berkshire average. Hardly anyone is out of work. Overcrowded homes are rare. The worst thing most residents deal with is the traffic on the A4.

Police records show about 60 crimes per 1,000 residents in Thatcham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 10% below the average for West Berkshire. That is 2,014 recorded crimes across the year. Both are published figures, and the rate is calculated on its own population base, so the two should be read side by side rather than run through a calculator. The number looks bigger than it feels, which is true of crime figures almost everywhere and is the reason people who read only the headline end up alarmed about towns where nothing much happens.

For comparison, West Berkshire as a whole records about 67 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same period. Thatcham sits under that, not dramatically, but consistently enough that the town has no need to apologise for its postcode.

The neighbourhood texture fits a settled commuter town. Population density averages about 5,030 people per square kilometre across the town's statistical areas, unemployment is about 2% and about 3% of households are overcrowded. These describe the kind of place Thatcham is rather than explain its crime figures: housing estates of owner-occupied semis and people with jobs to get up for, the sort of setting where the neighbourhood watch sticker on the window does more work than the neighbourhood watch.

On the mix, violence and sexual offences make up about 45% of recorded crime in Thatcham, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is higher than the national share and worth stating plainly. It is also a broad statutory category that includes common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere, so the label sounds worse than much of what sits inside it. The rest of the list runs close to the national pattern: anti-social behaviour at about 15% against 16% nationally, shoplifting at about 7% against 8%, criminal damage and arson at about 7% against 7%, other theft at about 6% against 7%, and public order offences at about 6% against 7%. Outside that one category, Thatcham's crime looks like everyone else's, only less of it.

What happens after a report is a different question, and the answer belongs to the police force rather than the town. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which puts it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. That does not measure how safe Thatcham is. It measures how likely a reported crime is to end with someone in court, and on that front the honest answer is that the odds are not in your favour anywhere in the force area.

Thatcham is one of the safer towns in West Berkshire, and crime is among its lesser worries. Buyers looking for something to fret about will find better material in the flood maps.
