What are the schools like in Soho?

For anyone buying or renting in Soho.

Soho's schools are excellent, and few people living here have a child to send to one. Every school Westminster's inspectors have graded is good or outstanding. There is one state primary in the area. The nearest secondary is a short bus ride. Few parents in London get a borough this reliable, and fewer still choose to raise a family above a cocktail bar to get it.

The local primary is Soho Parish Church of England Primary School, the only mainstream state primary in the area. Its Key Stage 2 maths results average a score of 100, the national expected standard. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts a primary about six minutes' walk from the average Soho home. The parish of St Anne was created in 1687 because the area had grown too big for its old church. The parish still has its primary school, which is more than the aristocrats who built Soho Square managed to hold on to.

Across Westminster, Ofsted has graded 25 schools, and all 25 are good or outstanding. Nine of them are outstanding, and none is rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 18 settings in the borough have no published grade yet and sit outside those counts. A clean sweep across a whole borough is rare enough that Westminster parents could reasonably stop reading inspection reports.

Places at all of these schools are allocated under Westminster's published admissions rules, so living near one does not secure a place, however short the walk. A church school can weigh other criteria as well as distance, so read the school's own admissions policy alongside the council's booklet for the year you are applying. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 18 minutes' walk away, or about 15 minutes by public transport. Getting to a secondary is a short trip, though the move from primary still means a longer one.

The real constraint is the housing. About 5% of Soho households are couples with children, and about 52% of homes have a single bedroom. The schools are ready for more pupils than the flats can produce.

Schools are one of Soho's real strengths: a sound parish primary on the doorstep and a borough where every graded school has passed its inspection. A family that can find enough bedrooms will find the schools the easy part.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
