What are the schools like in Shepherd's Bush?

For anyone buying or renting in Shepherd's Bush.

Schools are the best thing about Shepherd's Bush, by a distance. Every graded school in the borough is good or outstanding. Nearly half of those are outstanding. The nearest primary is about five minutes' walk from the typical front door. Parents arrive for the Central line and end up staying for the inspection reports.

The primaries are strong. Across the 11 mainstream state primaries in the area, the average maths score at the end of primary school is about 107. Wormholt Park Primary School and Old Oak Primary School serve the streets towards the Scrubs, and Ark White City Primary Academy covers the newer end of White City. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about five minutes away on foot for the typical home, which turns the school run into a walk round the block.

Secondary is a smaller field. The area has three mainstream state secondaries, and their pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 50. Ark Burlington Danes Academy, Hammersmith Academy and Phoenix Academy are the three names on the list. With only three schools in the average, one strong or weak year at any of them shifts the whole figure, so the individual school's results matter more than the local average. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 12 minutes' walk away, still close enough that nobody needs a lift.

Hammersmith and Fulham's inspection record is clean. Of the 28 schools Ofsted has graded in the borough, all 28 are good or outstanding, 12 of them outstanding, and none requires improvement or is rated inadequate. Another 24 settings hold no published grade yet. An inspection record without a single weak grade is rare enough that parents here tend to lead with the Ofsted report and get round to the house afterwards.

Admissions are where the clean record stops helping you. Hammersmith and Fulham allocates places under its published admissions rules, so buying near Wormholt Park or Burlington Danes does not by itself put a child in either, and an outstanding school three streets away can be full by the time your street comes round. Ask the council for the distance at which each school's last place went in recent years, and set that against the house you are looking at. Most families find out in the spring which side of that line they bought on, and nobody brags about getting the school they applied for.

The schools are the reason a stretched budget makes sense here. Families who can get in will find little to complain about from five to sixteen.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
