Who lives in Romsey?

For anyone buying or renting in Romsey.

Romsey is a town of settled, comfortable people who arrived, liked it, and stopped looking. The typical resident is in their late forties. Most own their homes. Incomes sit above the national middle. This is not a place people pass through on the way to somewhere better, because as far as they are concerned there is nowhere better, and the numbers largely agree with them.

Ownership is the backbone. Roughly seven in ten households own their home, which is a high share and the clearest single fact about who lives here. Private renting accounts for only about one in seven, with a similar slice again in social housing, so the town runs on people who bought rather than people who are passing the lease around. That tenure mix is what gives Romsey its stability and, it must be said, a certain resistance to anything new happening quickly.

The age profile leans mature without being a retirement village. The median resident is around forty-seven, older than the country as a whole, and the prime early-career band of twenty-five to forty-four makes up only about a quarter of the town. Young adults are here, but they are outnumbered by the people who have already done the raising, the buying and the settling, and are now enjoying the quiet they paid for.

The money matches the postcode. A typical household pulls in about £65,000 a year, comfortably north of the national middle, and about four in ten adults hold a degree. This is professional, provincial prosperity rather than flashy wealth, the sort that shows up in the cars in the drive and the second holiday rather than anything louder.

Households skew toward the smaller and the older. About a third of homes are single-person households, and nearly one in five are lone pensioners living alone, which is the flip side of a town that people move to and stay in for decades. Couples with children make up a smaller share, roughly one in five, and lone-parent households fewer than one in twelve. It is a place of established couples and people ageing in situ more than one of young families filling the schools.

The verdict is that Romsey is one of the most settled and comfortable communities you will find, and that community is its greatest strength. Well-off, well-rooted and in no hurry, the people here are the reason the town feels as safe and unbothered as it does. If you are looking for churn and reinvention, look elsewhere. If you want neighbours who are staying put, this is about as good as it gets.
