Is Patchway a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Patchway.

On the published numbers, Patchway does not come out as a safe area, and there is no gentle way to frame it. The recorded crime rate runs at about 193 offences per thousand people over the past year. That is roughly 137 percent above the average for the wider council area, which sits nearer 81 per thousand. Around 3,800 crimes were logged across the town in the twelve months to spring. Whatever a quiet residential street feels like on a Sunday morning, the figures put the town firmly on the wrong side of the local average.

Take the rate seriously, and read it the right way. The figure of about 193 per thousand is the published rate for the area's statistical patch, worked out on its own population base, and it is not a number to re-derive by dividing the crime count by the resident headcount, because the two figures count different populations and the arithmetic comes out misleading. What the rate does tell you cleanly is the comparison, and the comparison is stark: against the surrounding council area, Patchway records well over double the crime per head. A gap that size is not a rounding artefact or a single noisy month distorting the picture. It is a settled pattern, and it is the reason the town sits at the bottom of the scale on safety. In practice a rate this high is the sort that shows up in contents-insurance quotes and in the ordinary precautions people take without thinking, and it is worth budgeting for rather than being surprised by. The temptation, standing on a calm-looking road at a viewing, is to decide the numbers must be about somewhere else. They are not. They are about here, and the honest move is to treat the headline as real rather than argue yourself out of it because the street looked fine on the day.

The verdict does not want dressing up: on crime, Patchway scores at the floor of the scale. The town is affordable and well placed for the northern edge of Bristol, but it carries a crime rate that comfortably beats the local average and a yearly volume to match, and anyone buying here should walk in with that fact in full view rather than discover it after the boxes are unpacked.
