What are the schools like in Palmers Green?

For anyone buying or renting in Palmers Green.

The schools around Palmers Green are one of the best reasons to move there. Every graded school in the borough is rated good or better. The local primaries score well in maths. Inside the area itself there is one state secondary school to judge by. Parents here get quality early on and fewer options at eleven.

There are four mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils averaged about 106 in the Key Stage 2 maths tests. Hazelwood Infant School and Hazelwood Junior School are the pair most families in the middle of Palmers Green will know first, split by age on Hazelwood Lane so that the same family does the school run to two front doors for a few years. The wider list for the area also takes in Firs Farm Primary School, Oakthorpe Primary School and St Michael at Bowes CofE Junior School. A church school's admissions rules can count things besides the distance from your front door, and that is worth reading early on.

At secondary level the area has one mainstream state school, with a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 54. St Anne's Catholic High School for Girls is the secondary named for the area. A girls' school with its own admissions criteria will not be the default for every family, and families with sons will have their secondary search decided for them on day one. Most families will look across the borough.

Enfield's council area has 42 schools and settings with a published Ofsted grade, and every one of them is good or outstanding, two of them at the top grade. Not one is rated requires improvement or inadequate. Another 37 have no published grade yet and are simply waiting on an inspection, so they say nothing either way. When the inspectors have found no weak school anywhere in the borough, the choice for a parent comes down to distance and admissions rules more than to any inspection report.

That makes the admissions rules the part to understand. Enfield allocates places by its published criteria, and living close to Hazelwood or any other named school is a strong starting point that still does not reserve a desk, because the rules decide in the end and the house does not. Check the council's admissions pages for the year your child applies and the criteria the schools you want actually use.

Palmers Green's schools are a strong reason to buy here, with good primaries close to home and a borough where no graded school falls short. The only thing a parent has to work hard at is the secondary choice.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
