What are the schools like in Icklesham?

For anyone buying or renting in Icklesham.

Good, and the primary school is walking distance from most doors. Four in five graded schools across the county are rated good or better. The village primary is about a seven-minute walk. Secondary school means getting in the car. Icklesham's school run is easy right up to the day your child turns eleven.

Ofsted has graded 54 of the 67 schools with a published grade across East Sussex as good or better, which is about four in five. That count covers the whole county, not only Icklesham, so it describes the system your child's application goes into rather than the school at the end of your lane. Seven of those schools are rated outstanding, 7 require improvement and 6 are inadequate. Another 84 settings across the county have no published overall grade yet. They are ungraded, which says nothing about whether they are any good.

The village has its own primary, Icklesham Church of England Primary School and Nursery, and the Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 7 minutes' walk away for a typical household here. The other named primary nearby is St Thomas' Church of England Aided Primary School. Both are church schools, and a church school's admissions criteria can have more clauses than a holiday-let contract, so read the admissions policy before you fall for a house. Only 11% of households here are couples with children, so the playground crowd is small, which is part of why parents like it.

Secondary school is a different trip. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 14 minutes away by car, 23 by public transport and 78 on foot. The 78-minute walk is there for completeness, and no parent is actually going to test it. Plan on a bus pass or a lift.

A school's name on a property listing doesn't guarantee a place. Admissions run on the council's and each school's own criteria, which can change from year to year, and living close to a school improves your odds without promising anything. Ask the school and East Sussex's admissions team before you exchange contracts, not after. The time to find out that your address falls outside the allocation rules is before you've paid stamp duty on it.

Schools are one of Icklesham's real strengths: a strong county record, a primary on the doorstep and only one car journey to plan for. The primary years are the easy part here. It's the secondary run that needs thinking through before you buy.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
