Is Herne Bay a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Herne Bay.

Yes. Herne Bay is safer than the district around it. Crime runs well below the Canterbury average. The biggest category looks much like it does everywhere else. The one thing it has more of than usual is people behaving badly in public, not people breaking in. The main complaint here is manners rather than menace.

Police recorded crime in Herne Bay at about 95 per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, roughly 16% below the Canterbury district average. That's about 3,200 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both figures are published statistics, and the rate uses its own statistical population base, so it won't match a quick calculation against the town's headcount.

Side by side, the district runs at about 113 crimes per 1,000 residents and Herne Bay at about 95. The town sits comfortably under its own district's line. It's worth remembering that the next time someone calls the whole coast rough on the strength of one bad night out.

In texture, the town is more built-up than its seaside reputation suggests, averaging about 5,470 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 3% and overcrowding about 3%. On those numbers this isn't a town under strain. It's a settled place with the usual seaside wear and tear.

The mix mostly tracks the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 37% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers everything from serious assault down to common assault without injury, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere, so the local figure is ordinary rather than alarming. Anti-social behaviour is the one that stands out, at about 21% against 16% nationally. Shoplifting is about 10% against 8%, a problem for the tills rather than anyone's front door. Criminal damage and arson make up about 9% against 7%. Other theft is lower than the national share at about 5% against 7%, and drugs match it at about 4% each. The estate-agent line about a quiet town is broadly true. The benches just get more attention than they deserve.

After a report, the charge rate is a force-wide figure, not Herne Bay's own. Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it sixth of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. About 36% of cases close with no suspect identified. So if something of yours goes missing, the odds of it ending in a charge are better than in most of the country, though that's still a low bar. None of this measures how safe the streets are, only what happens once something has already gone wrong.

Safety is one of Herne Bay's strengths. It's quieter than its district, and ordinary in the places where ordinary is what you want.
