The schools are the best thing Hayes has going for it, and much better than the town's reputation suggests. Nearly every graded school in the borough is rated good or better. The primaries post solid test scores. Nothing in the borough is rated inadequate. In a town better known for its crime figures and airport traffic, the schools make a stronger case for moving here than anything else does.
Around here there are nine mainstream state primaries, and their pupils average about 106 in the key stage 2 maths tests. That is a steady result across a cluster of schools serving a young, mostly renting town. Pinkwell Primary School and Dr Triplett's CofE Primary School are two of the names families will hear first. Lake Farm Park Academy sits beside the country park it is named after. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 put the nearest primary about eight minutes' walk from the average home, which is a short school run by London standards.
There are four mainstream state secondaries in the area, and their pupils average an Attainment 8 score of about 42, weighted by the number of pupils at each school. Harlington School carries the name of the neighbourhood this page also covers, and Rosedale College and Global Academy are among the others. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about a quarter of an hour's walk away, or around 14 minutes by bus. Hayes's most famous teacher was George Orwell, who taught at a boys' school on Church Road and later wrote about the town under thinly disguised names. Its teachers now leave a better legacy than he left the town.
Ofsted has graded 38 settings across the London Borough of Hillingdon, and 35 of them are good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Seven are outstanding, three require improvement and none are inadequate. Other settings in the borough have not been graded yet and are not counted in either figure. Three schools needing improvement out of 38 is a small number. If you are a parent with one of those three schools as your nearest, the other 35 being fine does not help you much.
Grades are only half the question. Hillingdon Council gives out school places by its published admissions rules, so a house near Pinkwell or Harlington does not come with a place at either school. Look up how far from the gate last year's places went for the school you want, then check that distance against the house before you commit. Parents who skip that step find out in April, when the offer letters arrive.
Hayes is where a buyer gets a better school list than the house prices, the crime figures or Orwell would lead you to expect. For families, the schools are the main reason to choose the town.
