Is Great Missenden a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Great Missenden.

Great Missenden is a safe place to live, with recorded crime well below the rest of Buckinghamshire. Violence and sexual offences make up about the same share as they do nationally. Anti-social behaviour makes up a smaller share. Burglary is the exception. Anyone moving in should check the locks before checking the crime map.

Police records for Great Missenden show 837 crimes in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 37 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 44% below the Buckinghamshire average. The figure covers a full twelve months, so one bad weekend doesn't distort it.

Across Buckinghamshire as a whole, the published rate for the same year was about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents. Great Missenden's rate is about 37.

There are about 1,670 people per square kilometre in the area. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 1% of homes are overcrowded. Most homes here are large and well spaced, and few people are out of work.

The breakdown by type of crime is mostly close to the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 36% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 10% against 16% nationally. Other theft is about 10% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, and public order offences about 9% against 7%. Burglary is the category that stands out, at about 9% of recorded crime against about 4% nationally. Because burglary is a larger share of crime here than elsewhere, the locks, alarm and side gate are worth checking at a viewing.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question from how much crime there is. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That ranks it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed without a suspect being identified. Those are figures for the whole force, covering a much larger area than one Chilterns village, and they say nothing about how much crime happens in Great Missenden. Low crime in the village doesn't mean that a crime, once reported, is likely to be solved.

Safety is one of Great Missenden's real strengths. Crime here is low, and the only category to take seriously is burglary.
