Is Elsenham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Elsenham.

Elsenham's crime rate is about average for its part of Essex. Its rate is slightly above the district's. Two in every hundred residents are unemployed. Homes are rarely overcrowded. The gap between the village and the rest of Uttlesford is small enough that one busy month could close it.

Police recorded 439 crimes in and around Elsenham in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 65 for every 1,000 residents. That is roughly 6% above the average for Uttlesford over the same twelve months. The police calculate the rate against the population of their own statistical areas, which is why it shouldn't be checked by dividing the count by the village's headcount.

Uttlesford as a whole ran at about 62 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Elsenham's 65. The village is a little above the district average.

Across its neighbourhood areas the village averages about 2,700 people per square kilometre, a figure that comes from the built-up streets and leaves out the surrounding fields. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 1% of homes are overcrowded. None of those numbers looks like the usual explanation for crime, and none of them should be read as one.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 36% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category includes common assault without injury and is the largest almost everywhere, so a share that close to the national one is unremarkable. Anti-social behaviour is the one that stands out, at about 26% of the total against about 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson account for about 10%, against 7% nationally. Other theft (6% against 7%), vehicle crime (6% against 5%) and public order offences (6% against 7%) are all close to the national shares. A few hundred incidents a year is a small base, so a handful of cases can shift any of these shares by several points. On numbers this small, the anti-social behaviour figure could be down to a single bad summer. The police's street-level crime map shows where reports cluster, and it is worth checking the specific road before you put in an offer.

Essex Police, which covers the whole county including Elsenham, charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally. That puts it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. These are force-wide statistics, and they measure what happens after a crime is reported, which tells you nothing about how likely one is in Elsenham. For a buyer, the practical point is that after a break-in or a scratched car the odds of anyone being charged are low.

Elsenham is about as safe as an ordinary Uttlesford village, slightly above the district on recorded crime and with anti-social behaviour making up a larger share of reports than the national figure.
