Denham has more water and open space around it than most villages this close to London. A park is a couple of minutes' walk from most front doors. Water is barely further. The gardens are generous. The outdoors is the one thing nobody here has to drive to.
The typical Denham home is about 140 metres from the nearest public green space, and there are about 11 green spaces within a kilometre. Broadwater Park and the historic grounds of Harefield Place are both close by, and the village's own green edges run out towards Higher Denham and Tatling End. On a walk out of the front door, the park usually comes before the end of the street.
Water is the other surprise. The nearest river, lake or canal water is about 370 metres from the average home, and there are about 24 bodies of water within a kilometre. The River Colne passes north of Denham Court under a listed footbridge. Denham Lock and Widewater Lock are each protected as conservation areas of their own, which tells you how seriously the water here is taken. A village known for a golf club turns out to be surrounded by water.
The National Cycle Network is about a kilometre from the typical home, and none of Denham's postcodes are right beside it. Cycling into the countryside means riding to the network first.
The shops and pubs show what the area is like day to day. The wider UB9 postcode district has 84 shops, 10 pubs and 7 restaurants on the rating records. Food hygiene is the one thing the village does perfectly: all 12 rated food premises in Denham hold the top score, and none are at the bottom. There are not many places to eat, but all of them have passed.
Across Buckinghamshire, fine-particle air pollution averaged about 7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024. That is a county-wide figure. Homes on the side of the village nearest the motorway junction may get more than their share of the traffic.
The character comes from the mix. There is an old village with a church and a conservation area, Denham Green with its own shops, Denham Aerodrome on the higher ground to the north with private planes and helicopters, and the Buckinghamshire Golf Club inside the parish. It is a village with extras that a city would struggle to fit in.
Private gardens are where Denham is most generous. There are about 180,000 square metres of private garden for every 1,000 residents, so most houses come with space at the back as well as a park down the road. Few buyers here have to choose between the two.
The business rating list records 28 rateable premises in the village itself. That is a valuation count of premises, not a list of businesses currently trading, and it is a small one. For a weekly shop, residents go elsewhere.
No area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland overlaps Denham. The green space here belongs to the village, not to a national designation, so you can walk on it without being one of the visitors.
Denham's surroundings are among its strongest assets. Parks, water and big gardens are on almost everyone's doorstep, and it is the part of village life that people here use every day.
