What are the schools like in Cranfield?

For anyone buying or renting in Cranfield.

Cranfield's schools are good, though for older children they mean a bus ride. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the council area are rated good or better. The village primary carries the village's name. The secondaries are outside the village. Primary is a short walk, and secondary is a daily journey.

Ofsted has given an overall grade to 59 schools and settings in Central Bedfordshire, and 52 of them are rated good or better, close to nine in every ten. One is outstanding and 51 are good. Five require improvement and two are inadequate. Another 43 settings have no published grade yet, because they haven't been inspected or don't carry an overall grade, and they aren't counted either way. These figures cover the whole of Central Bedfordshire. They say the council area is reliable at schooling, but they don't grade any one Cranfield classroom.

The school carrying the village's name is Cranfield Church of England Academy. Central Bedfordshire Council allocates places using its published admissions rules, so living close to a school doesn't guarantee a place in it, however short the walk to the gate. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about 17 minutes' walk from a typical Cranfield home, or about nine minutes by car. Nearby villages have their own primaries, including Marston Moreteyne and Husborne Crawley. Two schools that once served the area have closed. Any old directory that still lists them is out of date.

Secondary school is where Cranfield parents start planning journeys. The secondaries in the area's register include Lincroft Academy and Wootton Upper School, with Kimberley 16-19 Stem College for sixth-form age. The same 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 18 minutes away by car, 29 by public transport, and roughly an hour and a half on foot. In practice, that makes the bus or the car part of the school day from Year 7. It's worth checking which secondary your address feeds into under the council's rules, and timing the morning journey to it on a school day. A village primary on the doorstep says nothing about the secondary commute.

Cranfield's best-known place of education is Cranfield University, and no child in the village can go there until they have finished at every other school on this page.

Schooling is one of Cranfield's real strengths, backed by a council area where good or better is the normal grade. The only real cost is the extra journey once children reach secondary age.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
