The area around Colden Common is countryside first and village second, and the figures make that literal. About fourteen green spaces sit within a kilometre of the average home. The nearest one is under two hundred metres from the front door. Part of the parish falls inside a national park. This is a place where the fields start before the houses have properly finished.
Green space is not a nice-to-have here, it is the defining feature of the map. Roughly fourteen separate areas of open space lie inside a kilometre of the typical home, and the closest is around a hundred and sixty metres away, which is the sort of access most towns can only dream about. Water is nearly as generous. There are about thirty blue-space features within the same radius, the nearest a couple of hundred metres off, thanks to a river running through the edge of the parish and the ponds scattered across it. Between the greenery and the water, you are rarely more than a short walk from somewhere to let a dog off the lead or lose an afternoon.
The character is rural cluster rather than standalone village. Colden Common sits at the centre of a ring of hamlets, from Hensting and Nob's Crook to Highbridge and Brambridge, each too small to be anything on its own but adding up to a proper spread of lived-in countryside. For anything the village cannot supply itself, the larger neighbours do the work. Eastleigh and Fair Oak are the nearer towns for the weekly shop and the bigger errands, while Twyford, Otterbourne and Shawford fill in the gentler commuter-belt villages around it. Grand estate parkland is close too, with Cranbury Park sitting just outside the village. The overall feel is settled, quiet and low-density, the kind of area where the loudest thing most days is the weather.
So what is the area around Colden Common like? Genuinely excellent as surroundings go. Green space on the doorstep, water a few minutes further, a national park across part of the parish, and a scatter of villages and towns close enough to keep it practical. If the landscape were the only thing you graded, this village would score at the very top.
