Is Cobham, Surrey a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Cobham, Surrey.

Fairly safe, but it is not the safest corner of Elmbridge. Crime runs a little above the borough average. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Car crime makes up a bigger one. Cobham is a comfortable place where it pays to lock the car.

Surrey Police recorded 1,288 crimes in Cobham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 70 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 11% above the average for Elmbridge as a whole. The gap is real but modest, and the reason for it turns up further down.

The comparison is between about 70 per 1,000 for Cobham and about 63 per 1,000 for Elmbridge. Those numbers are close enough that one busy year on the High Street could close the gap, and far enough apart that the brochure line about Cobham being the safest village in Surrey deserves a raised eyebrow.

This is not a hard-pressed place. Cobham has about 2,470 people per square kilometre on average, unemployment around 2% and about 2% of households overcrowded. None of that explains the crime figure, and none of it should be read as a cause. It does set the scene: a comfortable, spread-out area of large detached homes, where the things worth taking are usually parked on the drive.

The crime mix explains most of the gap. Violence and sexual offences make up about 31% of recorded crime in Cobham, against about 35% nationally. That category covers everything from serious assault to common assault without injury, and here it is smaller than the national norm. Anti-social behaviour is about 20%, against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 9%, against 5%, the clearest difference in the list. Criminal damage and arson is about 9% against 7%, public order about 8% against 7%, and shoplifting about 7%, a little under the national 8%. The pattern points at cars and property rather than people. Surrey Police publishes a street-level map on police.uk, and checking the road you are buying on for vehicle crime over the last twelve months will tell you more than any borough average.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer comes from the force as a whole, not from Cobham. Surrey Police charged a suspect in about 11% of cases in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, and about 36% of cases closed with no suspect identified. That figure covers the whole county. If your catalytic converter goes, the odds of getting it back are set across all of Surrey, not on your drive.

Safety in Cobham is middling for Elmbridge. Violence and sexual offences make up a smaller share than they do nationally and the streets feel calm, but the car on the drive is the most likely target.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
