Is Cheshunt a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Cheshunt.

Cheshunt is about as safe as the borough around it, and a little safer than average for Broxbourne. Crime runs just under the borough rate. Unemployment is low. The town has more anti-social behaviour and shoplifting than the national pattern, and less of the more serious categories. That puts it in the ordinary middle, which is where most of Hertfordshire's commuter towns sit.

Hertfordshire Constabulary recorded about 4,760 crimes in Cheshunt in the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026. The published crime rate for the town was about 93 per 1,000 people, roughly 4% below the Broxbourne average. Neither figure says anything about a particular street, and neither one makes for an alarming headline.

Broxbourne as a whole ran at about 98 crimes per 1,000 people over the same year, against Cheshunt's 93. A gap of that size between a town and its own borough is a rounding difference in practice. If Cheshunt were the problem, the borough's figure would show it.

Cheshunt packs in about 5,840 people per square kilometre on average, with unemployment at about 3% and overcrowding at about 6% of households at the 2021 census. Those numbers describe a fairly dense, mostly employed commuter town. None of them causes crime, and none of them points to trouble here.

The mix of crime matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences make up about 32% of Cheshunt's recorded crime, slightly below the 35% share nationally. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upward, and it is the biggest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 21%, against 16% nationally. Shoplifting is about 13% here and 8% nationally. Other theft is about 7% in both. Vehicle crime is about 6% here against 5% nationally, and public order offences are about 5% against 7%. The most common complaint in Cheshunt is likely to be someone being a nuisance, and much less often anything that ends up in court. To check the street you are interested in, look at the police's own street-level crime map for that postcode, which shows the reports by month.

Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% across England and Wales over the year to May 2026, ranking 23rd of 42 forces. About 40% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are the force's figures for the whole county, and Cheshunt's own charge rate isn't published. The charge rate tells you what happens after a crime is reported. It says nothing about how likely one is to happen.

Cheshunt is middling on safety. It is ordinary for a busy Hertfordshire town, a fraction better than its borough, and its most common crimes are a nuisance far more often than they are a danger.
