The schools in Bromley are very good, and getting a place is the hard part. Almost every graded school in the borough is rated good or better. None is rated inadequate. The nearest primary is a short walk for most families. The trouble is how many other families want the same school.
The 13 state primaries in the area averaged a maths score of about 106 at the end of primary school. Bickley Primary School, St George's Bickley Church of England Primary School and Haberdashers' Knights Primary are among them. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about an eight-minute walk from the average home. That is a short school run, and the family two doors down has the same short run to the same gate.
There are three state secondaries in the area, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 47 at the end of Year 11. Bullers Wood School for Boys, Haberdashers' Knights Academy and Bonus Pastor Catholic College are the local options. The same 2019 modelling put the nearest secondary about a 15-minute walk away. Bullers Wood School for Boys tells you in its name who it admits, which is more than most admissions policies manage.
Across the London Borough of Bromley, Ofsted has rated 40 of the 41 graded settings good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Fifteen are outstanding, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 48 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, so they are not counted in either direction. Those borough figures cover everything from Bromley town to the far end of the borough, so they describe the council's schools as a whole. A single school can sit on either side of that average.
Places are allocated under Bromley council's published admissions rules, so living near a school you like does not on its own secure a place for your child. When almost every school is good, the competition shifts to the few that are outstanding, and families who chose a house for a named school sometimes learn in April that the rules had a different answer. Bromley council publishes each school's admissions criteria, and the faith and single-sex schools set their own conditions on top of distance. Read those criteria for the schools you actually want before you choose a road for them.
There are independent schools close by too, including Bromley High School in Bickley. Some families pay fees to avoid the admissions process altogether.
Schools are one of Bromley's strongest points. The weak spot is how many families want the same handful of them.
